Kathmandu, March 16: Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Kumar Khadka has reaffirmed the commitment of the Government to guaranteeing the economic, social and political rights of women, and to achieving gender equality.
Minister Khadka, who is leading the Delegation of Nepal to the 61st Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), said this at the Commission’s general debate held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The theme of this year’s CSW session is ” Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work”.
While pledging to work closely with the international community for the advancement of women globally, the Minsiter also called for continued supportive role of all development partners in line with their commitments.
In his statement, the Minister stressed the importance of women’s economic empowerment for the full and effective implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action as well as Goal 5 and Goal 8 of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.
He briefed about the Government’s affirmative and inclusive policies, legal provisions and institutional mechanisms to narrow down gender disparities, to address poverty, unemployment, and discrimination and to ensure safe workplace for women.
Sharing Nepal’s remarkable progress in securing women’s leadership in key positions, the Minister acknowledged that challenges still lie ahead, particularly in ensuring the basic rights and security of migrant women, in formalizing the informal economy and in recognizing the unpaid women’s domestic work in the GDP.
Also today, the Minister met with Laila Bokhari, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, on the sidelines of the CSW session. During the meeting, the two ministers exchanged views on various aspects women’s empowerment and gender equality.
Minister Khadka thanked the Norwegian government for extending cooperation to Nepal in the first phase of the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and in other important projects on social welfare and women’s empowerment.
Minister Bokhari, while appreciating Nepal’s remarkable inclusion of women in the political leadership, stated that Norway would continue to support Nepal through the ongoing projects and new initiatives. RSS
